Job Description Summary

Under the general supervision of the Creamery Production Manager, the Creamery Technician provides comprehensive support for coordinating and facilitating production activities at the Cal Poly Creamery. 

The Cal Poly Creamery is one of 14 units/operations operated under the Department of Animal Science. Each of these facilities operates to support academic instructional needs, facilitate research opportunities, and production priorities as determined by the department. The incumbent is expected to provide facilities operational expertise tailored to meet the academic support objectives and ensuring and maintaining compliance with all state and Federal requirements and regulations. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in creamery operations is desired
  • Be able to operate, or be able to quickly learn to operate, a variety of dairy food processing equipment
  • Possession of pasteurization certificate training, within 6 months of the date of hire
  • Possession of first aid and CPR certificate training, within 6 months of the date of hire
  • Ability to maintain extensive records related to the facility operation
  • Ability to utilize multiple software platforms
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of individuals
  • Maintain a high standard of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and professionalism
  • Participation in creamery-related University events outside typical operating hours is expected
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions
  • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to work within typical temperature and environmental conditions in creamery operations 
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds 

Typical Essential Functions

  • Under the direction of the Creamery Production Manager, coordinate and facilitate production activities at the Cal Poly Creamery
  • Provide academic program support, including student training and supervision in creamery operations
  • Serve as a technical resource and assist in completing research protocols while ensuring compliance with regulatory implications
  • Assist Creamery Production Manager with collaborative research projects and short course productions with the Dairy Products Technology Center (DPTC) as needed
  • Assist Creamery Production Manager with maintaining required safety and training records with all related Institutional, State and Federal guidelines and regulations 
  • Assist Creamery Production Manager with conducting required testing and compliance with all related Institutional, State and Federal guidelines and regulations
  • Maintain all production, inventory, and related operational records
  • Provide preventative maintenance, basic repair, and coordination of major service or repair of equipment and instrumentation
