We are seeking an energetic, self-starting, and enthusiastic leader for our Traffic Planning and Operations team!

The County of San Luis Obispo is offering a career opportunity to join an APWA accredited Public Works Department.  The Department is a team of over 300 dedicated professionals who serve the residents and visitors of the Central Coast. 

The Department of Public Works is responsible for transportation planning, operations, and improvement projects on 1,300+ miles of County maintained roads and is seeking a Senior Engineer with professional level civil or traffic engineering, operations, construction management, supervisorial and/or project management experience to lead these essential teams.

About the Position:

The Traffic Planning and Operations unit is primarily responsible for maintaining roadway operations and planning for future improvements on County roadways.  In addition, this position is responsible for supervising and mentoring a team of associate engineers, supporting County management, and liaisoning with outside agencies and stakeholders.  The position includes planning and supporting delivery of federally, state and/or locally funded transportation project and is an integral part of a larger team.  

Representative Duties:

  • Coordination with functional units (environmental, right-of-way, design, construction, and consultants) 
  • Facilitates team meetings and provides recommendations
  • Maintains County adopted Level of Service (LOS) standards
  • Updates County Traffic Regulation Codes and Mandates
  • Reviews reports and studies, engineering designs plans, specifications, and estimates supporting development
  • Plans and prioritizes the County’s transportation needs and future projects
  • Prepares and coordinates the transportation program’s budget and funding needs
  • California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG)
  • Obtains and administers consultant services per applicable laws and federal grant funding requirements
  • Supervises, mentors, monitors and delegates work to staff engineers within the team
