Organic Farm Supervisor Featured

Under the general supervision of the Plant Science Operations Manager and Director of the Grimm Family Center for Organic Production and Research, this position will focus primarily on organic cropping systems. This position will work with department staff, faculty, and students, providing facility and production support to the Horticulture and Crops Units, including the Grimm Family Center for Organic Production and Research, the Strawberry Center and Agricultural Operations.  Duties involved with the position include being the lead on all organic cropping systems, equipment operation, crop supervision, irrigation, irrigation maintenance, planting, crop, and field management, harvesting, student assistant supervision and general pest control in certified organic and conventional systems.



·         Organic Crop planning including 3-year rotation plan (In accordance with Plant Science Operations Manager and Organic Center Director)

·         Plan/Schedule daily tasks for student employees on the organic/conventional vegetable farms

·         Supervision, safety training, and general farm training of student employees on organic/conventional vegetable farms

·         Maintain Organic Certification in conjunction with Plant Science Operations Manager

·         Performs a variety of tasks in collaboration with the farm manager, faculty, and students including:

  • operations associated primarily with organic vegetable production 
  • operations involved with conventional vegetables and fruit/nut production. 
  • operations associated with plant nutrition, 
  • installation of agricultural water and irrigation systems, 
  • operations associated with waste management, 
  • general pest control in conventional and organic systems, 
  • general land preparation/tillage, mowing and cultivation

·         Identify and resolve problems that arise, such as broken water lines, broken fences, or machinery that does not operate correctly

·         Perform routine daily servicing of farm vehicles and equipment

·         Perform and provide support for the preparation of land for crop production 

·         Perform and provide support for the irrigation of field crops

·         Provide direction and supervision to student assistant crew(s), as assigned

·         Operation of equipment, including vehicles with a manual transmission, two and four-wheel drive (on and off-road), ATV, wheel and track laying tractors, mini-excavator, forklifts, and loaders. 

·         Assist faculty and students under the direction of the Plant Sciences Operations Manager with instruction, research, and production activities

·         Provide direction and supervision to student assistant crews

·         Be ready for assigned duties on any part of the Horticulture or Crop Units, as needed

·         Respond to emergency situations that may arise in the evenings, weekends, or holidays to assist in Agricultural Operations and frost protection, as requested by the supervisor

·         Ability to apply pesticides with appropriate certification or license (QAC or QAL)

·         Ability and willingness to work with Centers (Cal Poly Organic Center, Cal Poly Strawberry Center, Center for Sustainability, and Irrigation, Training and Research Center), other academic departments and Agricultural Operations under the direction of the Plant Science Operations Manager or Department Head. 


·         Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or University in the field of agriculture (horticulture, agronomy, plant sciences, or similar field)

·         Five years of experience in vegetable production, including irrigation and the operation of a variety of farm equipment 

·         Two years of experience maintaining organic certification records. 
·         Good organizational and interpersonal skills  

·         Ability to operate two and four-wheel drive vehicles (including off-road travel), ATV, mini-excavator, wheel track tractors; irrigation lines and pumps preparation, planting, cultivating, and harvesting equipment 

·         Experience in equipment repair and maintenance

·         Computer literate

·         Ability to use computer software used for crop production

·         Ability to provide effective training on safe operation and use of a variety of equipment 

·         Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings, and technical manuals 

·         Must be willing and able to respond to emergency situations that may arise in the evenings, weekends, or holidays, as requested by the supervisor

·         Must possess a valid California Driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to our insurance company underwriters and comply with state/federal requirements   

·         Possess a Qualified Applicators Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicators License (QAL) for pesticide applicators (or ability to acquire within 6 months)
