Teacher - AM/PM Childcare Program

Description:

The City of Arroyo Grande provides licensed before and after school child care at Ocean View and Branch Elementary Schools, and a similar program at the Mark M. Millis Community Center.

We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced teachers to join our team. This position supervises classroom and playground activities for children and performs other related duties as required under general supervision from the Recreation Supervisor.

HOURS:

This is a part time position working up to 19 hours per week. There are two shifts available: 7:00 am to 12:30 pm and 12:15 pm to 6:00 pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS:

(Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following):

  1. Plans, coordinates, and manages the operation of a child care site.
  2. Supervises staff/personnel and participants assigned to the site.
  3. Prepares attendance reports, accident reports, enroll progress reports, parent fee records, weekly assignment reports, and other related reports.
  4. Maintains staff and participant files.
  5. Investigates complaints, accidents, and injuries occurring at the site.
  6. Meets with parents regarding problems and/or information related to the child care program.
  7. Follows established procedures and guidelines to provide a safe and healthy environment for children.
  8. Assigns, supervises, and evaluates staff.
  9. Develops and implements plans for control of participants, and with the Recreation Supervisor, initiates referrals as necessary.
  10. Attends and participates in required in-service training activities.
  11. Drops off payment envelope Monday through Friday at the Recreation Services Office.
  12. Drops off staff logs every other Thursday at the Recreation Services Office.
  13. Provides individual and group activity supervision indoors and outdoors.
  14. Enforces discipline policy upon participants and staff.
  15. During the school year, assists with homework and offers assistance as needed.
  16. Assumes equal share of joint housekeeping.
  17. Supports policies and goals of the child care facility.
  18. Plans and manages site staff meetings biweekly and attend area staff meetings once a month.
  19. Respond and perform assigned duties in the event of a City declared emergency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and programs common to the field of child care and recreation services.

Ability to:

  • Plan, promote and implement child care and recreation activities under direction of the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with community and staff.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education and Experience: Twelve (12) units of Early Childhood Education and three (3) years of experience in child care.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environmental Conditions:

Indoor facility and outside playground and field environments; exposure to playgrounds, grass, dirt, noise, dust, fumes, odors, inclement weather conditions, mildly ill children and occasional restroom accidents. Extensive contact with children, parents and general public.

Physical Conditions:

Physical demands include leading physical activities with children, walking, standing, dancing, playing or sitting; lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds; repeated bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, and squatting.

Must possess vision to read written materials, a computer screen, and lead learning lessons for different developmental stages; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone; finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, walk over uneven or slippery surfaces, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, as well as lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects up to 20 pounds.
