The Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) promotes excellence in research at California Polytechnic State University, both basic and applied, as fundamental to the mission of the University and essential to California’s economic and civic vitality. ORED is committed to enhancing these efforts by providing administrative and financial support, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal submission, research compliance, and contracts and grant administration. The office promotes the development and function of centers and institutes, essential core facilities, and emboldens innovation and economic development through strategic partnering and industry engagement initiatives. Cal Poly has a long tradition of interdisciplinary research that continues through the production of new knowledge and innovative solutions to society’s grand challenges. In support of ORED goals, the Office of Corporate Engagement / Innovation (CEI), is responsible for administering industry/for-profit contract research/outreach, economic development, entrepreneurship support, intellectual property, and the Cal Poly Technology Park. The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Corporate Engagement / Innovation (CEI) reports directly to the Vice President of ORED.

Reporting directly to the AVP – CEI, this position is responsible for providing administrative support to the AVP, as well as supporting the CEI staff. This position will coordinate work effort through the AVP – CEI with the Grants Development Office (GDO), Sponsored Programs Office (SPO), and other operating units within ORED.

The Administrative Analyst provides high-level administrative support in a complex environment to ensure the day-to-day fulfillment of the responsibilities of the AVP. The purpose of this role is to provide broad clerical and administrative support for the day-to-day operations of CEI, including, but not limited to, receptionist duties, event coordination, mailings, communications, correspondence, web content, database support, and required forms and submittals for industry contracting, intellectual property, technology park operations, and budget activity and travel needs. This position will have ongoing contact with Corporation leadership and other university administrators and committees, in addition to students, faculty, staff, service providers, and the general public.

Work is specialized and of a highly sensitive and confidential nature. Working relatively independently, the individual in this position must be able to use their own initiative in organizing work assignments and determining the most effective means for completing assigned duties as well as having the ability to assess the significance of ongoing operations. The individual must be able to use effective communication and listening skills with the ability to make decisions on a daily basis regarding the routing of inquiries based on procedures and policies.


  • Associates Degree or equivalent training/experience, with a minimum of three (3) years for progressive, responsible administrative experience.
  • A working foundation of knowledge of principles of organization, administration and management, preferably in an auxiliary or university setting.
  • Strong ability to take initiative, independently plan, organize, coordinate and prioritize work, and perform in various situations where numerous and diverse demands with time constraints and overlapping requirements are involved.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with regards to materials and sensitive issues, including personnel actions, projects and legal activities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, web-based publishing software, Access Database, and others.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize, meet timelines and adapt to a quickly changing fast paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships and to interface with all levels of the university community.
  • Excellent written communication and proofreading skills (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) with a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the organization.
  • Ability to pay a high level of attention to accuracy and details.
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work overtime or adjust schedule on occasion
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions.
  • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Salary Range: $40,497-$60,756 per annum
