Come join the food service team at San Luis Coastal! We are looking for a cook that will prepare and cook main dishes and hot side dishes in the District food service program. May assist in other food service areas when cooking is completed. This position works 180 days during the school year in the months of August through June. Hours are 7.5 hours per day, Monday - Friday from 6:30 to 2:30 pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch. Benefits include sick, vacation, paid holidays and health benefits. Position will begin in early August.

Receive general supervision from the Central Kitchen Supervisor. May exercise functional and technical supervision over assigned food service staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Prepare, season, and cook soups, meats, sauces, gravies, main dishes, vegetables, and other foodstuffs; bake and steam meats, vegetables, and other foods.
Measure and mix ingredients according to recipes.
Observe and test foods being prepared to ensure that they are properly cooked; taste or check food for flavor and eye appeal before releasing for service.
Assist in setting up serving line for meal periods.
Utilize a computerized point of sale system. Cashier during meal periods.
Maintain cleanliness of work area and ensure that good sanitation practices are followed.
Monitor operation of cooking equipment to prevent maintenance problems.
Assist in developing recipes and new menu items.
Determine quantities of supplies needed for the cooking function and to meet menu requirements; arrange for proper storage.
Wash pots, pans, utensils, and other cooking equipment; store equipment. Clean refrigerator and freezer as assigned. Clean steam-jacketed kettles.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The position requires the ability to see for purposes of performing essential job duties, reading recipes, menus, directions, and other printed matter; understand speech at normal levels in person and on the telephone; communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person and on the telephone; operate kitchen equipment such as steam-jacketed kettles, convection ovens, slicers, and mixers with dexterity; work rapidly and use both hands to assemble food trays and prepare food; routinely lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. The duties are performed in a school cafeteria and there is frequent bending and crouching to set up serving lines, stock shelves, and clean work areas and kitchen equipment; pushing/pulling food carts weighing up to 40 pounds; reaching in all directions; long periods of standing on concrete floors; repetitive movements of hands to prepare and serve food; exposure to hot and cold temperatures; and use of detergents, bleach, and other related chemicals.
