Accounting Specialist

Description:

Under the general direction of the Associate Controller, apply sound accounting principles in a complex financial atmosphere. Assist with banking and accounting functions such as account reconciliations and reporting activity. Responsible for performing tasks related to Travel, including processing travel advances, analyzing and auditing reimbursements and expense claims, and processing of Cal Poly Corporation (CPC) P-card transactions. Responsible for performing certain tasks related to Payroll processing including Payroll remittances and tax deposits.

Performs a variety of clerical duties related to General Accounting including providing receptionist duties and clerical assistance; receive and distributing mail; generate and distribute purchase orders; data entry of transactions; and support General Accounting Department. Oversee and provide direct supervision over the daily operations of the records center. Reasons and shows logical conclusions, interprets and analyzes policy, monitors and maintains compliance with CSU and Corporation policy guidelines and be dedicated to the provision of high-quality customer service. Required to work independently, problem solve, and apply critical, analytical thinking to obtain positive outcomes. The duties and responsibilities include the ability to apply policy, the application of both manual and computerized accounting procedures, reconcilement functions, and oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years of progressive responsibility and experience in accounting, finance, or cash management, or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration
  • Ability to support multiple cross functional teams
  • Knowledge of reconciliations
  • Ability to interpret and apply corporation and CSU travel policies and procedures
  • Maintain job skills and compliance related knowledge
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel and financial software
  • Must read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of this position
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance
  • Ability to interact in a friendly and tactful manner with students, faculty, and staff, and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the same
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
  • Must have the ability to clearly answer questions and to resolve operating and procedural problems
  • Must know standard business office procedures, work independently and perform financial or statistical work of average difficulty rapidly and accurately
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, organize and meet time lines
  • Ability to analyze errors or problems and propose or implement solutions
  • Represent CPC in committee meetings with CSU regarding travel policy and interpretation
  • Ability to supervise and train others
