 The Cal Poly Leadership & Service area consists of the Center for Leadership, the Center for Service in Action, Clubs & Organizations, and Fraternity & Sorority Life, which supports the development of student leadership and service on campus and in the surrounding community. Their events and services encourage leadership skill development and competency, assumption of leadership and service roles, community building and collaboration, and the continuation of service to one's community after graduation. Clubs & Organizations provides an opportunity for students to participate in registered student organizations with a specific interest and focus relevant to the participant‘s academic or personal interest, to participate in club sports as student-athletes, and acquire leadership, event planning, and team skills. 

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Program Coordinator assumes responsibility for the daily operations of the AmeriCorps College Corps programs. The Program Coordinator recommends and executes policies related to the delivery of programs and services to students, faculty, and staff at Cal Poly and service sites/host agencies. The program coordinator suggests program priorities, assists in moving toward achieving program goals, and conducts assessment to evaluate program effectiveness. This position will assist the Lead Program Coordinator and Manager with maintaining positive and productive relationships with Corps members, host agencies, staff, and faculty stakeholders. The program coordinator will oversee College Corps members in one of the three focus areas: Climate Action, Food Insecurity and K-12 Education. In addition, the position contributes to the ongoing compliance with reporting and other requirements for the grants that support these programs, and their potential ongoing renewal. Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive: 

  • Coordinate specific programs including establishing program plans, student support and training, marketing, budget, and resources. 
  • Coordinate and develop the programs and services of the College Corps Program alongside the other Coordinators.
  • Supervise and advise College Corps fellows from a variety of backgrounds, including those that are sensitive or confidential in nature.
  • Respond to university and partner inquiries involving members and host agency placements, challenges, and successes, consulting with AmeriCorps team as needed.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, supervision and evaluation of the College Corps fellows.
  • Plan and implement comprehensive training plans for AmeriCorps College Corps students with the collaborative input of the AmeriCorps team and partner agencies.
  • Contribute to short and long-term goal setting and strategic planning for the Leadership & Service Department that supports the priorities for the University and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Use sound judgment in the host agency recognition process and the implementation of related policies and procedures including risk assessment and evaluation of position descriptions and work assignments for member placement.
  • Coordinate the creation/revision of evaluative systems and tools to assess impact and measure achievement of desired learning outcomes based on Cal Poly goals and standards.
  • Mentor members in their efforts to affect positive changes within their organizations by consulting on organizational dynamics, conflict resolution, and other strategies for effective leadership.
  • Maintain weekly communications with program fellows, host agencies (CHOs) and other campus partners.
  • Meet with host agencies and members to ensure university and partners` objectives, requirements, and safety measures are understood prior to recognition.
  • Represent the AmeriCorps programs to the public, media, and off-campus organizations.
  • Collect and report operational and assessment data related to members and host agencies (e.g., participation, impact).
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain currency in the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate industry-leading solutions. 

Position Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A master`s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to serve as a role model for students, demonstrating appropriate professional behavior, leadership techniques and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to work in an environment reflecting the needs of the program constituents, advise students and student groups from a variety of backgrounds, and recognize relevant value systems.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to use office equipment including copier, fax, and telephone system.
  • Ability to successfully work independently, organizing own work and coordinating work activities of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interface with all levels of staff including students, faculty and staff, and the public. 
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with varied personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. 
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the campus population and with those from various backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. 
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions.
  • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter` under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude. 
  • Knowledge of social media platforms such as Instagram, Discord, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  •  Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials.
  • Sitting or standing for extended period of time.
  • Physical agility to lift 20 pounds to shoulder height.
  • Physical agility to lift, carry, push, or pull objects
