Position Title: Medical Assistant (MA)

Program & Location: San Luis Obispo-Full-Service Partnership

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a member of the Full Service Partnership multidisciplinary teams and is responsible for providing trauma informed client check in calls; obtaining and documenting client reported data and providing to treatment team; scheduling appointments; obtaining factual information to create or update files and charts; providing assistance in the completion of forms; assuring federal and state confidentiality measures are followed; providing a range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services; supporting clients during medical appointments and coordinating care with outside providers. This staff will be the one of the support persons for the FSP Psychiatrist/Nurse Practitioner and will coordinate care with the FSP Medication Manager (Licensed Psychiatric Technician).

Hours/ Salary

Full-time, non-exempt position. 32 Hours per week. Anticipated hiring range is $22.00-$23.00. Position Summary

Responsibilities and Duties

• The FSP MA supports the psychiatric staff (prescriber MD/NP and licensed psychiatric technician) in providing medical care to FSP clients.
• The MA follows the outlined treatment plan in order to support the medication needs of FSP clients. This may include, obtaining discharge paperwork and other medical records for continuity of care, contacting pharmacies to reconcile refill requests and informing clients when medications are ready for pick-up, scheduling appointments, completing pre-appointment check-in forms and obtaining client vital signs.
• The MA may facilitate medication access for FSP clients by providing them properly-labeled and pre-packaged prescription medications from the TMHA medication room.
• The MA participates in obtaining data for the client-centered comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history (e.g., onset, course and effect of illness, past treatment and responses, and risk behaviors.), mental status, and diagnosis; physical health and dental health; use of alcohol or other drugs; education and employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living (e.g., self-care, living situation, nutrition, money management) and family structure and relationships.
• Under the administrative direction of the Team Leader and clinical supervision of the FSP Prescriber (MD/NP), and in collaboration with other FSP teammates, the Medical Assistant will follow established protocols for , psychopharmacologic and medical treatment and medication policies and procedures including transcribing, and recording psychotropic medication prescribed by the team psychiatrist/NP; document psychotropic medication effectiveness, complications, and side effects, and arrange for required lab work according to protocol.
• Participate in weekly staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
• Document all contact with clients in a timely manner. Complete program paperwork such as individual client files, charting client's report of progress, admission/ discharge paperwork, Medi-Cal billing, and time sheets.
• Under the direction of the Medical Team Lead, and in collaboration with other TMHA medical staff, the Medical Assistant will organize pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
• Assist clients in learning more about substance abuse and treatment options open to them such as A.A. and other support groups. Work with clients in identifying possible precursors that could lead to alcohol or other drug abuse.
• Promote, encourage and maintain trauma-informed practices in all services and activities. Practice and promote, both individually and in team meetings, TMHA`s Collaborative Communication Guidelines in order to facilitate clear, empathetic and person-centered communication.
• All other duties as assigned by Team Leader.

Requirements

Must be an individual with experience as a consumer of mental health services. Must exhibit/possess good judgment, decision-making, and problem solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and strong oral, written, and communication skills. Well defined organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly. Ability to handle intense situations, display good judgment and decision-making skills, and remain calm and clearheaded under pressure. Able to work effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or socio-economic level. Ability to possess and maintain good physical and mental health. Ability to work well within a team and maintain a professional, respectful attitude in the workplace. Ability to be willing to work with supervisor oversight and direction. Attendance is an essential function of this job that requires face-to-face interaction with clients and/or other employees. Conditions of employment include: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver`s License, at least 2 years driving experience and DMV driving record that meets TMHA`s current vehicle insurance requirements. May be required to utilize reliable personal vehicle and auto insurance. Must comply with a TB assessment (possibly a TB test if needed to confirm a negative tuberculosis result) and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting. Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
