Outage Utility Worker – Diablo Canyon Power Plant, Avila Beach, CA

In anticipation for our two refueling outages at Diablo Canyon Power Plant in 2025, we will be conducting interviews for entry level temporary additional utility worker positions no later than January of 2025.

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E and is currently subject to collective bargaining and union dues.

Your employment is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining unescorted access at a commercial nuclear power plant including passing an extensive background investigation which includes credit check, initial and random drug screen, psychological screen, and completing all computer-based training courses and passing all instructor led classes.

Department Overview

Diablo Canyon Power Plant's (DCPP) Maintenance Departments are responsible for performing maintenance and modification to plant systems, structures, and components during Refueling Outages periods.

Position Summary

This position's principal duties consists of supporting maintenance related activities under the direction of a journeyman including work in radiological controlled areas during Refueling Outages at a commercial nuclear power plant.

  • Must be able to wear company provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including hard hat, safety glasses, safety goggles, gloves, full body fall protection harnesses, ear plugs and/or muffs, safety vests, raingear, fire resistant clothing consisting of long sleeve shirts, pants and/or coveralls.
  • The normal work schedule is a 4 day, 10 hour shift – Monday-Thursday 0630-1700 hours.  May be required to work weekends, night shifts, an/or extended hours with rotating days off.

Responsibilities:

  • Principle duties consist of semi-skilled work such as helper for a journeyman or apprentice, including the use of hand tools under direction, monitor confined spaces and foreign material exclusion areas, housekeeping, tool decontamination, and fire watch activities and work in a boiler, vessel, condenser, or heat exchanger cleaning crew.  May be required, under direction, to use portable power tools for cleaning purposes or other work not requiring precision.  With training, may operate equipment such as forklifts and scissor lifts in the performance of their duties, and operate 25 ton or less capacity pendant cranes while assisting a journeyman or working under the direction of a journeyman.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience 
  • Valid California Driver's License 
  • Labor intensive work:
    • Ability to work at heights on stationary scaffolds and/or wearing applicable safety harnesses
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, access equipment through an 18 inch diameter manhole, and work in up to 120 degree Fahrenheit environment
    • Ability to be nimble: bend, stoop, and twist
    • Ability to climb including ladders and stairs
    • Ability to walk up to five miles daily and stand or sit for long periods of time
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to transport material up to 500 pounds in carts
    • Ability to successfully complete radiation worker and department specific training
    • Ability to pass respirator qualification, which entails passing a medical examination, respirator training, and fit testing requirements
    • Ability to wear and work in a respirator in radioactivity contaminated and/or environmentally hazardous areas of the plant
    • Ability to work in and around radiation/contamination fields and environmental hazard areas

Desired:

  • Experience performing maintenance related tasks at a commercial power plant or industrial facility
  • Related training such as through military, craft apprenticeship, trade or technical school, employer training or power plant training.
