About The Position

The County of San Luis Obispo is seeking a Youth Services Librarian who will be responsible for implementing youth services both within the libraries and throughout the communities in their region. Under the supervision of the Coordinating Librarian, Youth Librarians:

  • Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, and responsive to patrons' needs.
  • Plan, promote, and produce innovative community-focused programs, and activities for families, children, and young adults.
  • Create partnerships with local schools. Organize and coordinate tours, on-site visits, and instructional classes for children, young adults, and families.
  • Make school visits. Present programs for schools, parent groups, and community organizations. Initiate cooperative programs with schools for the benefit of young people.
  • Assess the effectiveness of current youth programming and library materials and adapt services accordingly.
  • Work regular evenings and weekends.
  • May act as leadworker.

Note: The current vacancy is at the San Luis Obispo Library. The list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future Librarian vacancies at other library locations.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A positive, enthusiastic leader with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of emerging library trends and the ability to implement new ideas independently.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Displays expertise in reading levels, interests, and needs of children, teens, teachers, and families.
  • Knowledge of ongoing technological advances and how they relate to children.
  • Comfortable with children's programming including storytime, crafts, tween, and teen activities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong knowledge of early literacy and youth services fundamentals.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
