Title: District Support Specialist

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, the District Support Specialist will work with site teams, through the central office, to support inclusion practices for students with disabilities. This includes a comprehensive program of instruction, social/emotional learning, and behavior model. This position will guide teams to ensure high quality instruction, social/emotional, behavioral, and adaptive skills support within the general education environment. The District Support Specialist provides best practice knowledge to sites through general education and special education collaboration support inclusion practices.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. Based on the curricular needs of the district's vision of grade level instruction for all students:

  • Provide curriculum, lesson planning, social/emotional, behavioral, and adaptive skills training, modeling, and consultation support for site staff within the general education setting;
  • Provide information to teachers, related service providers and instructional assistants who support students with disabilities in the general education environment. This may include, but is not limited to, IEP development, curriculum adaptation, behavior, student learning modalities and learning styles, and/or classroom accommodations/modifications;
  • Support development of individual, site, community, and district-wide training to further integration and inclusion practices for all students;
  • Participate in district-wide initiatives related to special education (e.g. peer mentoring, equity);
  • Review and provide consultation regarding IEP development and compliance to support integration and inclusion practices based on individual student needs;
  • Collect data related to student progress (academic and behavior), site compliance, and other data needs to support implementation of site-wide inclusion programs;
  • Support development and purchasing of curriculum (core and supplemental), adapted materials, and content to support instruction;
  • Act as a central and impartial resource among district administration and central office staff, educational area school site staff, parents, students and community members to assist in the resolution of a wide variety of complex, sensitive, and confidential issues;
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable provisions of federal, state, and district laws, rules and regulations;
  • Facilitate and monitor the implementation of services provided to students served within special education programs;
  • Provide support to site leaders in program development and innovation of special methods and approaches related to special education to ensure effective practices in instruction and compliance with federal and state laws;
  • Support research and provide information to stakeholders on the various programs and services provided by the district;
  • Participate in school site meetings related to inclusion; represent the district and or department at meetings;
  • Assist in the development, evaluation, implementation, revision, and interpretation of policies, programs, and procedures;
  • Coordinate and prepare material for department conferences, collaboratives, and study groups;
  • Participate in the preparation, administration, and control of special projects activities;
  • Plan and develop specialized program services delivery models in alignment with a continuum of services across all schools;
  • Assist program managers in the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures for administering services for students served within special education programs, including extended school year programs;
  • Provide mentorship for new teachers, interns, and other training positions for both certificated and classified staff;
  • Serve as a liaison with community agencies; coordinate central intake for potential special education referrals from social community agencies as needed;
  • Exercise sound judgment to ensure protection and confidentiality of all documents and information concerning parties involved in compliance with federal and state regulations and district policies and procedures;

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three years' experience in a special education setting with knowledge and implementation of inclusion practices.

Master's Degree (Preferred); Bilingual/Multilingual preferred.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

An appropriate valid California Teaching Credential or Pupil Personnel Services Credential;

Possession of a valid California driver's license and availability of private transportation may be required for some positions in this job class (mileage expense allowance provided);

Inclusion certification training or equivalent (preferred).

ENVIRONMENT

Office and classroom environments; driving vehicle to conduct work visits; adverse weather conditions; fast paced work, constant interruptions; contact with dissatisfied individuals.
