Definition and Purpose

The Custodian (Recreation Center) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment within the Recreation Center and, as assigned, other ASI-managed facilities. The position supports daily operations of the Recreation Center by performing routine and deep-cleaning tasks, preparing program and activity spaces, restocking supplies, and ensuring all facility spaces meet established health, safety, and sanitation standards.

This position is based at the Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Requirements

Educational & Qualifying Experience, Skills, Licenses, Credentials
Educational/License/Credential Requirements
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Knowledge of standard custodial practices, cleaning methods, and sanitation procedures.
  • Ability to follow directions, procedures, and checklists.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with staff.
  • Strong attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing facility needs or event schedules.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
  • Ability to move heavy materials up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Regular physical activity required, including lifting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, and handling custodial equipment.
  • Work may occur in noisy, wet, humid, or high-traffic environments and requires movement between multiple facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Perform daily custodial tasks to clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms, locker rooms, fitness areas, offices, corridors, common spaces, and high-traffic public areas.
  • Complete regular deep cleaning of high-use spaces to maintain hygiene and meet safety standards.
  • Conduct routine floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, stripping, buffing, and carpet cleaning.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment, fixtures, glass, mirrors, doors, counters, and touchpoints throughout the facility.
  • Remove trash and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Use and maintain specialized custodial equipment.
  • Complete assigned daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning checklists.
Operational Support & Space Preparation
  • Ensure rooms and activity spaces are clean, organized, and ready to be used for scheduled events.
  • Restock custodial supply areas and communicate inventory needs or shortages to supervisors.
  • Coordinate cleaning tasks using event logistics reports and planning documents.
  • Support special events by adjusting cleaning routines and providing timely response to increased sanitation needs.
Safety, Hazard Response, & Maintenance Support
  • Identify and promptly address spills, hazards, or unsafe conditions to maintain a safe environment.
  • Report facility damage, maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, or unusual conditions to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
  • Follow all safety protocols related to chemical handling, equipment operation, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
Collaboration, Communication, & Training Support
  • Work collaboratively with custodial staff, student staff, maintenance personnel, and facility operations leadership to support smooth daily operations.
  • Provide guidance and demonstration to new staff on cleaning processes, cleanliness expectations, and safety practices.
  • Communicate daily updates, issues requiring additional attention, or priority needs to supervisors.
  • Participate in ASI-wide trainings, departmental meetings, and professional development as required.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Starting Hourly Rate: $20.69 per hour
  • Hourly Range: $20.69 per hour - $28.97
