ABOUT Security and Law Enforcement Specialists (MAs) are crucial to ensuring safety and security within the Navy. They engage in various security operations, from antiterrorism to police duties, both at installations and maritime environments. MAs may conduct investigations, secure access points, operate patrol vessels, or oversee specialized K9 teams, playing a vital role in maintaining a secure atmosphere across Navy operations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting waterborne security patrols and interdiction missions.
  • Performing U.S. Customs inspections and base security patrols.
  • Enforcing aircraft and flightline security requirements.
  • Conducting law enforcement operations and ensuring river security.
  • Providing protective services for senior officials and dignitaries.
  • Supervising K9 teams in explosive and narcotics detection.
  • Executing physical security inspections and investigating UCMJ violations.
  • Organizing and training security personnel.
  • Managing brigs and overseeing crime prevention programs.

What to Expect

Assignments may vary from shore operations to maritime deployments, with responsibilities adapting based on mission needs. Daily tasks differ widely, creating a dynamic work experience.

Work Environment

Over a career span, Specialists typically spend approximately 60% within fleet units and 40% in shore commands, often in expeditionary roles that support Joint Service operations globally.

Training & Advancement

Following Recruit Training, Specialists undergo a rigorous 10-week training program in San Antonio, TX, encompassing antiterrorism, armed sentry techniques, crime prevention, military and civil law, fitness training, communications, first aid, firearms, and physical restraint techniques. Motivated individuals can expect strong promotion opportunities.

Education Opportunities

Access to college credits via the American Council on Education and degree programs through the United States Naval Community College (USNCC).
