Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine contributes to the Nye County economy and works with local stakeholders to improve healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description
Incumbent will work as part of a team to provide environmental services for the gold mining operations and ancillary facilities. Under the direction of the Environmental Manager, will ensure that activities related to Tailings Management and Heap Leach Facilities at the Nevada Sites (Bald Mountain and Round Mountain) are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and licenses. All activities should be performed safely and align daily functions with Kinross values.
Responsibilities
Heap Leach Facilities Functions
- Develop, coordinate & monitor all activities related to safe operations of heap leach facilities (HLF), including permitting, design, surveillance (including monitoring and inspection), emergency planning, and HLF management plans and procedures; follow all applicable regulatory requirements or Kinross Standards for the Nevada sites.
- Coordinate, participate, and manage the Engineer of Record (EoR) inspections to track HLF performance for Nevada sites; manage EoR inspections, third party reviews, and other HLF inspections/reviews.
- Manage & implement action plans and schedules for internal or external review reports at the Nevada sites after VP-GM approval.
- Support process teams, deputy General Manager (GM) and Vice President-General Manager (VP-GM) in decisions for the HLFs.
- Coordinate with the Director, Tailings and Environment (DTE) to ensure corporate requirements are met.
- Coordinate & assist the Project Superintendent on new or expansion construction of Nevada sites HLFs.
- Manage, complete, and ensure all reporting requirements, including action item status, are completed on-time to the VP-GM and the DT.
Tailings Functions
- Manage, coordinate & monitor all tailings activities including technical aspects, safe operation, permitting, design, construction, operation, surveillance (monitoring and inspection), and emergency preparedness.
- Communicate with Environmental Manager, Nevada Operations to ensure regulatory commitments are met and to proactively manage and communicate with site personnel regarding tailings and regulatory obligations.
- Coordinate, participate in, and manage agency inspections, annual EoR inspection, third party reviews, and other tailings inspections; interact with EoR to track tailings facility performance.
- Review, update & submit as needed annually the OMS manual, EAP, prior to annual dam safety inspection.
- Coordinate with Environmental personnel on water balance, process water management & seepage performance; align with Kinross Water Management Standard.
- Lead Run-Out Studies: coordinate with the EoR the development of run-out locations, assumptions & detail in modeling & run-out mapping; review with DTE prior to completing the study.
- Ensure Tailings management plans comply with all regulatory and Kinross standards.
- Manage, complete, & ensure all reporting requirements, including action item status, are completed on-time to the VP-GM & the DT.
General Functions
- Communicate effectively with regulatory and government agencies, site personnel, and professional associations to maintain regulatory compliance.
- Complete permitting activities in a timely manner in collaboration with site personnel.
- Monitor proposed environmental regulatory changes and assess their impact on operations and resources.
- Inform the Environmental Manager Nevada Operations immediately of any compliance or permitting issues that may affect the company.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures; meet or exceed management's performance expectations.
- Punctuality and regular attendance required.
- Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications And Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Engineering; related scientific or engineering fields (e.g., metallurgical, civil or mining engineering; geology, chemistry, hydrology) may be considered.
- Previous environmental experience preferred; 8 years of mining experience preferred; gold mine experience preferred.
- Experience in Waste, NEPA Permitting, Reclamation, and Air Quality is an asset but not required.
- Experience with systems/databases to manage regulatory obligations is preferred but not required.
- Experience supervising and evaluating others; strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work with all levels of employees and regulators.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills; ability to explain environmental regulatory requirements to a diverse workforce.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with other Nevada site departments.
- Software experience: Microsoft Office; preference for Monitor Pro or other environmental records/obligations management systems, AutoCAD, Map 3D or GIS software, GoldSim; Nevada work experience preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; must have a valid driver's license.
