Job Summary

The Mathematics Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full?time, tenure?track Assistant Professor in mathematics education with appointment beginning August 17, 2026.

Position Details

  • Rank: Assistant Professor (higher ranks may be considered).
  • Salary Range: $97,788 $107,628.
  • University Hiring Cycle: Semester calendar, operating out of August 2026.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate mathematics courses for future elementary and secondary teachers.
  • Develop and maintain an active scholarship program that provides research and practical experiences for undergraduate students.
  • Serve in departmental and university service activities, including committee service, student advising, and building industry relationships.
  • Participate in the universitys teacher?scholar model, including peer?reviewed research, conference presentations, grant development, and publication.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or closely related field AND Masters degree in Mathematics (or equivalent coursework), OR Ph.D. in Mathematics with significant experience in research and teaching in mathematics education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student?centered learning and experience teaching mathematics at the university level.
  • Proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching and research with students, scholarly productivity, and promotion of student, colleague, and department well?being.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in an area compatible with or broadening the departments research activities (e.g., elementary mathematics education, secondary mathematics education, undergraduate mathematics education, K?12 teacher preparation, mathematics curriculum development, or active student?centered learning in mathematics classrooms).
  • Interest in teaching mathematics content courses for future elementary school teachers.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate student research.
  • Interest in pursuing opportunities for funding or participating in grant activities with colleagues.
