Job Description and Duties
The Hospital Police Sergeant will be directed by the Hospital Police Lieutenant in the Department of Police Services (DPS) at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
* Plan, prioritize, assign, participate, review and supervise employees' in investigation, patrol and administrative duties
* Establish schedules and methods for providing assigned law enforcement services and activities
* Train and evaluate assigned personnel
* Prepare police and supplemental reports as required
* Conduct internal affairs investigations of a general and specialized nature as assigned
* Apply and demonstrate the correct methods of Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions
* Conduct appropriate watch/shift orientation
* Responsible for Monthly Safety Inspection and oversee the maintenance of department law enforcement equipment
* Identify all new patients and employees in accordance with established policies and control access into the secured areas of the facility to those subjects using the appropriate identification badges
* Fingerprint and photograph all patients and complete and process Sex and/or Arson Registrations in accordance to Department of Justice (DOJ) regulations
* Maintain a high professional standard of performance and conduct consistent with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and Office of Protective Services policies, procedures and Post Orders

* BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Hospital Police Sergeant Exam Bulletin, OR
* BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility MUST meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
* BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

Working Conditions
* This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).
* The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital. The employee will also be required to work overtime and work at other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the department.
