Description:

The Mathematics Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking to fill two full?time, academic?year, tenure?track positions in applied mathematics, with appointment beginning August 17, 2026.


Job Summary


Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; higher ranks will be considered. Rank and salary are commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the individual selected.


Assistant Professor: $97,788 $107,628
Associate Professor: $112,500 $118,524


Excellence in teaching, an active program in research and scholarship, and departmental service are expected. Successful candidates must be committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education and be able to supervise undergraduate research projects and masters theses.


Applicants should be comfortable teaching a variety of mathematics courses, including upper?division and graduate level courses. All areas of expertise in applied mathematics will be considered, but areas of special interest include numerical analysis, computational methods, numerical optimization, machine learning, data science, and mathematical modeling.


Required Qualifications



  • Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student?centered learning and experience teaching mathematics at the university level.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) high?quality teaching and research with students.

  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) scholarly productivity.

  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) promoting the well?being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department.

  • Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Ability to teach a variety of mathematics courses, including upper?division and graduate level courses.

  • Expertise in applied mathematics in an area compatible with or broadening the research activities of the department.

  • Experience supervising student research and masters theses.

The Cal Poly Mathematics Department has approximately 33 tenure?track faculty, 24 full?time and part?time lecturers, 2 Frost postdocs, 11 graduate teaching associates, 2 administrative staff, and 275 math majors.
