TITLE: GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

DEPARTMENT: Golf Course

EXPERIENCE &

EDUCATION: High School Diploma. Experience in handling all phases of golf course maintenance required. Courses in Agronomy desirable. Certification(s) in Golf Course maintenance preferred.

SPECIAL

REQUIREMENTS: A Level: Must be a Class A member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, or have equivalent experience with a minimum of 3 years' experience as a Golf Superintendent.

B Level: Must be a Class B member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, or have equivalent experience with a minimum of 3 years' experience as an Assistant Golf Superintendent.

RESPONSIBLE TO: General Manager/Operations Manager

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hour week and on call 24 hours a day. Must be available to work weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime, as required to properly maintain the golf course.

OVERTIME STATUS: Non-Exempt

This is a full-time position, benefits, paying $35.00-$40.00/Hourly DOE

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

& RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plan, organize, supervise, and otherwise direct the Golf Maintenance staff within the guidelines set by the LACC Employee Handbook, and the General Manager/Operations Manager.


  1. Golf course maintenance activities will be planned using input from the General Manager/Operations Manager to provide a playing experience that is equal to, or superior to, the local competition.


  1. Train and instruct staff in the proper execution of their duties and in proper safety practices. Conduct and document regular staff meetings.


  1. Have sufficient knowledge to deal with personnel administration and regulatory agencies including:
    1. Employment laws relating to wages, hours, and working conditions
    2. Safety Standards, State law, Workers Compensation, and OSHA


  1. Provide each staff member with a performance evaluation using the LACC Employee Evaluation Form. Year-round employees will be provided this at the end of the calendar year, seasonal employees at the end of the season. The performance evaluation process includes:
    1. Provide each staff member with a current job description (update them if necessary)
    2. Review job descriptions with each employee and have them sign a copy for their

personnel file.
  1. Meet with each employee at the beginning of the period to set performance goals for

the upcoming period
  1. Providing periodic feedback, coaching, and training throughout the period
  2. Meet with each employee to providing a formal performance evaluation at the end of

the period.

  1. Consult with General Manager/Operations Manager on wage increases and recommendations for disciplining, hiring, and firing subordinates.


  1. Keep records on employee's performance and attendance.


  1. Assist the General Manager in creating the annual Reserve Budget for Golf Maintenance. Review the current reserve study and recommend replacement of major items when necessary. Collect bids to estimate the replacement cost of items proposed for replacement.


  1. Assist the General Manager/Operations Manager in purchasing Reserve items approved by the Board for replacement. In addition, assist the General Manger in selecting contractors and overseeing contracted projects.


  1. Provide Monthly reports to the General Manager or Office staff as requested. This may include an operational summary, operating income/expense variance reports, etc.


  1. Assist the General Manager in creating the annual Operating Budget by estimating future staffing needs, supplies, and operating expenses for the Golf Maintenance Department.


  1. Within limits of the budget, purchase all supplies to maintain the golf course and related areas. All major golf course procurement requests (>$6,000) must be accompanied by a purchase order signed by the Golf Superintendent and General Manager prior to purchase.


  1. Keep records on all golf course maintenance operations including equipment, supplies, and material on-hand.


  1. Make frequent inspection of golf course and other related areas to ensure proper standards are maintained.


  1. Possess knowledge of golf course maintenance including the following:
    1. Turf grasses and varieties
    2. Mowing greens, tees, fairways and roughs
    3. Sand Traps
    4. Use of pesticides
    5. Relocation of cups and tee markers
    6. Fertilizers and seeding
    7. Aerating and verticutting
    8. Watering
    9. Soils
    10. Drainage
    11. Irrigation systems and repairs
    12. Trees and ornamental shrubs
    13. Top dressing and soil amendments
    14. Sub-alpine environment and climate


  1. Possess knowledge of golf course equipment maintenance and repairs to maintain LACC Golf equipment.


  1. Possess a California certified pesticide applicators license or equivalent.


  1. Have knowledge of weeds, fungi and insects and their control.


  1. Know federal, state and local pesticide laws.


  1. Attend, on an annual basis, educational seminars, conferences, short courses, and superintendent meetings. Keep in contact with county or other specialists to keep abreast for latest turf practices.


  1. Possess knowledge in the following construction areas:
    1. Soil compaction
    2. Sprinkler installation
    3. Cart paths
    4. Greens, tees and fairways
    5. Landscaping
    6. Grades and grading
    7. Reading blueprints
    8. Golf course design and construction


  1. Know the game of golf. Should play golf to gain objective view of course from a players' standpoint.


  1. Have knowledge of management and business practices relating to golf course operations.


  1. Serve as an advisor to the Golf Committee and attend all Golf Committee meetings.


  1. Bring to the attention of the General Manager/Operations Manager possible safety problems.


  1. Must be able to work effectively with others and follow written and oral instructions.


  1. Perform additional duties as may be required.
