TITLE: Crossing Guard
SALARY RANGE: Hourly Rate
SCHEDULE: Varies by school site
DESCRIPTION:
Directs children during the access and egress of the school grounds; ensures their safety during the process; directs and monitors a safe flow of traffic in and around the drop-off/pick-up zones; maintains order in the zones for drop-off and pick-up before and after school; safely directs vehicular traffic and pedestrians around any hazards; reports behavioral problems to the principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
a. Required:
1. Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
2. Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
3. Ability to prioritize tasks.
4. Ability to direct children and adults in an effective and courteous manner.
5. Knowledge of traffic laws appropriate to school zones.
b. Desirable:
1. Previous experience working with children, preferably in a school setting.
2. Valid California driver's license.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Maintain safety and control of large numbers of children in a hectic environment.
* Safely direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic around any hazards; demonstrate caution when directing both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
* Direct and monitor a safe flow of traffic in and around the drop-off/pick-up zones.
* Direct children and adults in an effective and courteous manner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
* PHYSICAL:
1. See with or without vision aids, including accurate peripheral vision and distance vision; read printed matter with or without vision aids.
2. Stand and walk for extended periods of time; stoop, twist, bend over, grasp, reach overhead, push, pull, and move, lift and/or carry up to 15 pounds to waist height.
3. Hear and understand speech at normal levels.
4. Speak English so that others may understand at normal levels.
* MENTAL:
* Able to work in a hectic environment and maintain composure in stressful situations.
C. SOCIAL:
1. Interact daily in person with other members of the school staff, children, and parents.
2. Demonstrate comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
3. Because of the time urgent nature of duties and because work product of position is interdependent with that of other
staff, consistent attendance is required.
4. Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other students, parents, staff and members of community.
