Join our team as an Automation Specialist responsible for programming, installing, and maintaining industrial process control systems and SCADA instrumentation for water and wastewater facilities. This role combines hands-on system setup and panel assembly with advanced programming, testing, and compliance work.

Responsibilities

Programming & Automation

  • Program and configure PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) to meet project specifications.
  • Develop, test, and troubleshoot SCADA/HMI applications, including alarms, graphics, and historical data.
  • Modify and optimize existing control logic for efficiency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with engineers to integrate automation software with field instrumentation and networks.
  • Document program changes, maintain backups, and follow version control practices.

System Setup & Installation

  • Perform instrument setup and calibration.
  • Conduct I/O loop testing, wire tracing, and identification.
  • Run and assemble coaxial, Ethernet, and serial cables.
  • Install radio equipment, antennas, and masts.
  • Hang enclosures, run conduit, and pull wire.
  • Mount electrical components such as circuit breakers, contactors, relays, and PLCs according to design schematics.
  • Assemble enclosures by drilling, tapping, and cutting holes for wiring and mounting components.
  • Wire internal components following diagrams, ensuring proper routing, labeling, and termination.
  • Ensure panels comply with UL standards for industrial control panels (UL508A).

Testing & Compliance

  • Measure voltage, resistance, and current of electrical circuits.
  • Test panels for voltage, continuity, and circuit operation.
  • Perform insulation resistance and grounding tests for safety.
  • Conduct high-voltage tests to confirm insulation integrity.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and all electrical safety standards.

Troubleshooting & Support

  • Diagnose and resolve electrical problems such as shorts or faulty components.
  • Modify or retrofit panels to meet updated specifications.
  • Travel to customer sites as needed for troubleshooting and repair.
  • Update drawings to reflect as-built conditions.
  • Suggest or revise wiring diagrams and layout plans.
  • Ensure proper documentation, labeling, and part number tracking.
  • Acquire material quotes, place vendor orders, and manage inventory.
  • Work with engineers and customers to deliver custom control panels.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 7 years' experience with industrial control systems (water/wastewater utility experience preferred).
  • Ignition Gold Certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire).
  • Ability to distinguish colors used in electrical wiring.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe electrical practices.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights (20+ feet).
  • Comfort working in confined spaces, hazardous areas, and sewage facilities.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license with a clean record.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer service and team collaboration.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electronics, or related field.
  • State of California Electrician Certification (or ability to obtain within one year of hire).
  • Experience selecting UL-listed or UL-recognized components (wires, relays, fuses, connectors).
  • Experience collaborating with engineers on custom control panels and system design.
