Job Description Summary

This recruitment is for three (3) night shift custodian positions, two (2) will be assigned to the San Luis Obispo Campus and one (1) will be assigned to the North County Campus in Paso Robles. The schedule will be 5:00 tpm to 1:30 am Monday through Friday. This schedule is eligible for a 7.5% shift differential increase in pay.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, perform custodial work in college buildings and offices; and to perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Custodian I class is distinguished from other classes in the Maintenance and Operations Series in that incumbents are responsible for all custodial work at the college.

The Custodian class promotes institutional effectiveness by ensuring that District facilities are maintained in a safe and clean working condition for all students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Plan and organize custodial work;
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms;
  • Vacuum carpet floors;
  • Wet and dry mop floors;
  • Operate power vacuums, scrubbing and buffing machines, and shampooing machines;
  • Clean, dust, and polish furniture, woodwork, lockers, walls, and metal work;
  • Coat special hardwood gym floor; chemically clean, prep, tack, and apply finish;
  • Clean and sweep walks, corridors, and entrances;
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains;
  • Clean and wash windows and glass doors;
  • Empty waste containers and carry out waste;
  • Move and rearrange desks, chairs, tables, furniture, and other equipment;
  • Replace light bulbs;
  • Lubricate and service equipment used in the course of work;
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire prevention hazards;
  • Secure buildings and turn off lights;
  • Learn and implement safe work practices to meet safety standards;
  • Use cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment for all phases of custodial services;
  • Understand Hazard Communication Regulations and Material Safety Data Sheets;
  • Perform heavy physical labor;
  • Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds;
  • Stand for extended periods of time (mopping, scrubbing, shampooing, vacuuming and other related custodial work);
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Work at heights;
  • Ascend and descend ladder;
  • Perform other related duties as required.


Essential functions of particular positions within classifications may vary because job duties may vary by work location.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

  • Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade.


Experience:

Required

  • One year of general work experience. Experience in custodial work preferred.


Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of:
  • Modern cleaning methods, procedures, equipment, and materials;
  • Requirements for maintaining buildings in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition;
  • Requirements of Hazard Communication Regulation - "Right to Know";
  • Requirements for respirator use;
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary;
  • District policies and procedures.


Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties;
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.


Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift 100 pounds and/or carry 50 pounds;
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel crawl;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Work at heights;
  • Ascend and descend ladder;
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.


License and Certificates:

Required

  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

SALARY SCHEDULE
Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's policies, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below. Employees who work half-time or more are entitled to receive fringe benefits. The fringe allocation is money from the District to help cover the cost of insurance. Employees working half-time or more are eligible to participate in the District's medical, dental and vision insurance.

Employees with a work assignment of 50% to 74% of full time will receive one-half of the above stated fringe allocation.

If your insurance rate exceeds your fringe allocation, the balance will be deducted from your monthly payroll check. If the insurance plans selected cost less than the fringe allocation, any excess amount will be returned to the District. For more information about how fringe benefits are determined please refer to the collective bargaining agreement between SLO Community College District and Cuesta College Classified United Employees (CCCUE) or the Board of Trustees policy regarding management employees.
