JOB SUMMARY
Perform a variety of duties in the sorting and transporting of donated goods, which may include off-loading items from trailers/trucks, performing initial sort of textile and hard sort items, and transporting materials as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include any or all of the following:
Load trucks by placing materials in designated trucks for delivery to stores.
Off-load trucks and trailers by removing materials and placing in designated areas.
Perform initial donation processing prior to distribution to various processing departments
Transport materials to appropriate departments and locations, including transporting waste to the landfill (via truck). Transport salvage (both manually and via forklift).
Position trailers based on load status (full or empty).
Move vehicles (such as bobtail trucks) as needed.
Use of baler, tipper, compactor, forklift or other equipment as trained and or certified.
SECONDARY DUTIES
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQ'D:
Forklift certification.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Six months experience as a Material Handler 1 or equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Basic math ability.
Material handling techniques and use of material handling equipment.
Familiarity with Goodwill Central Coast's mission, general Company policies and procedures (this may be learned on-the-job).
EQUIPMENT USED:
Typical material handling equipment, trash compactor, tipper, baler and vehicles (trucks and forklift).
SKILLS/APTITUDES/TEMPERAMENTS:
Ability to communicate in basic oral and written English (depending on location, ability to communicate in basic Spanish may be acceptable).
Depending on specific position, may require ability to drive vehicles in the transaction of Company business. This requires a good driving record.
Ability to drive a forklift in the transaction of Company business. This requires forklift certification.
Ability to coordinate eye/hand/foot movement to safely maneuver in/out trucks/trailers, operate vehicle controls, walk up/down ramps and lift/stack donations.
Ability to perform routine work, adapting to change, as it relates to work flow without loss of efficiency.
Ability to maintain self-control; deal effectively with public and work in cooperation with co-workers.
Ability to meet and maintain established standards as communicated by the supervisor.
Ability to demonstrate satisfactory attendance as outlined in Company policy.
Ability to adhere to safe work practices as documented in Company safety policies; ability to report safety hazards/accidents promptly to supervisor or safety committee member.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
The work is routine with occasional periods of high activity/demand requiring little or no overtime to complete the work.
JOB SETTING
Work is performed on covered, but unenclosed dock area. The temperature and exposure to elements will fluctuate depending on weather conditions. Dust and dirt is controlled by daily cleaning of work area. There are occasional fumes from the trucks. There is occasional handling of household toxic products received in donations. Work is completed independently but in cooperation with whole department. There is occasional contact with public who donate at the dock. The noise volume is moderately high throughout the day depending on the amount of activity, equipment and vehicles in operation and radio operation.
Material handling equipment (forklift, hand truck, movable containers/racks) and trucks may be operated in or near work area. The job includes occasionally walking on uneven ground when going up and down ramps; otherwise, ground/work surface is even.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The job requires consistent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Heavier items (51 lbs. or more) will be moved either with assistance from another person or by using appropriate material handling equipment.
Normal or corrected talking, hearing, and seeing abilities are sufficient to perform the required tasks.
Sufficient mobility is required to walk up/down ramps, climb in/out of trucks and walk on uneven ground.
