There is an easy to overlook step that you should consider taking as you look for jobs in San Luis Obispo: identify the businesses and employers that are actually hiring. There isn't a resume polished enough or an interview so good that it will make a company that simply isn't hiring decide to hire you. You can save yourself a lot of time and stress by locating the industries that are hiring and target them in your search. Follow these steps and you'll be on your way:
1. Check out business publications: this is a well-worn method for identifying where the jobs are in your area. The business section of your local newspaper (and, of course, the classified ads) can give you a pretty good idea of where to look in your community. Larger publications such as Forbes often provide you this information as well, although on a much broader scale. This can be helpful if you are pursuing a career job, as opposed to just something in the interim.
2. Look for patterns on job boards: this one can be time consuming but it is still worth the effort. Go on to local job boards and search for patterns. Look for similar jobs that pop up frequently. Also, try to identify the top five businesses that have the most openings posted on the websites.
3. Look for areas that interest you: according to the Wall Street Journal, it is a good idea to take your hobbies or interests into account while you are job searching. If these interests can be tailored to a certain job in a hiring business/industry, they can help you find a much more rewarding career.
